Traditional Metal Braces in Mesa, Chandler, and Queen Creek, Arizona
Traditional braces are still the most versatile way to fix crooked teeth and a bad bite, and they handle cases that other options cannot. At Garn & Mason, our orthodontists have been straightening East Valley smiles for decades, and we will tell you honestly whether metal braces are the right call for yours.

What Traditional Braces Are
Traditional braces use metal brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by a thin archwire and held in place with small elastic bands. As your orthodontist adjusts that wire over the course of treatment, it applies steady, controlled pressure that moves your teeth into position and corrects how your bite fits together.
Today’s metal braces are noticeably smaller and more comfortable than the ones you remember from the nineties, and they remain the most predictable option for complex movement. That combination of precision and durability is why they are still the most widely used orthodontic treatment for kids, teens, and adults alike.
Who Traditional Braces Help
Metal braces work at any age, and they are often the best choice when a bite needs real correction rather than minor cosmetic straightening.
Kids
For growing smiles, braces can guide jaw development and correct bite issues while they are still easy to influence. Age seven is a smart time for a first checkup.
Teens
The classic age for braces, and still the most common. Color choices at every adjustment mean teens get some say in how their treatment looks.
Adults
It is never too late. Adults who need significant bite correction or want the most reliable results often choose metal braces over aligners.
Complex Cases
Traditional braces still do the best work for severe crowding, significant rotation, and bite problems that aligners struggle with.
What to Expect During Treatment
1. Complimentary Consultation
Come in, ask every question on your list, and leave knowing what comes next. We will examine your teeth and bite, explain your options, and tell you whether to start treatment now or wait.
2. Digital Scanning and Planning
We use the iTero digital scanner instead of the gooey mouth trays that traditional impressions require. It is more comfortable and more accurate, and it gives your orthodontist a precise starting point for planning.
3. Placing Your Braces
Your orthodontist bonds each bracket to your teeth and threads the archwire through. This appointment doesn’t require numbing, and you will leave the same day with your braces on and your first color choice in place.
4. Adjustment Visits
You will come in periodically so your orthodontist can adjust the wire and keep your teeth moving on schedule. This is also when you swap your band colors. We schedule carefully to ensure you’re seen on time.
5. Braces Off and Retention
When your teeth reach their planned positions, your braces come off, and you move into a retainer to hold your new smile in place. Your orthodontist will explain exactly how to wear it.
Pick Your Colors, or Pick a Different Bracket
Maybe you are a gold bracket kind of person. Maybe clear brackets. Maybe you like classic silver braces and bands. Between bracket options and rubber band colors, we have about as many combinations as you have crooked teeth.
Traditional silver metal braces are the most popular and the most economical choice. If you would rather your treatment be less visible, we also offer clear braces and gold braces, and Invisalign® clear aligners are an option for many teens and adults.

Traditional Braces Questions
How long does treatment with traditional braces take?
Treatment length depends on how much your teeth and bite need to move, so your orthodontist gives you a timeline at your complimentary consultation rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
What age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven, or at the first sign of a potential issue. Early treatment is not always needed, but an exam lets us monitor development and start at the right time. More on why age seven matters.
Can I choose the color of my braces?
Yes. Traditional braces come with a wide range of rubber band colors, and you can change them at each adjustment visit.
Does insurance cover traditional braces?
We accept most insurance plans and offer financing options. Our team will walk you through your coverage and payment choices before treatment starts, without turning your first visit into a math test.
